Judge Singh's Visit

Friday 24 April 2026 — 10:30am — Level 4 Tea Room

This Friday, Te Piringa Faculty of Law is welcoming a very special guest — District Court Judge Dr Ajit Swaran Singh. All Te Piringa students are warmly invited to join us in the Level 4 tea room at 10:30am for what promises to be an inspiring morning.

This is a rare chance to meet and connect with a highly distinguished member of the New Zealand judiciary in an informal setting. Whether you’re in your first year or final year of your LLB, opportunities like this don’t come around often — we encourage every member to come along.

About Judge Singh

Judge Singh’s legal career spans over five decades across Fiji, New Zealand, and Canada, and is nothing short of remarkable.

  • Holds an LLB and LLM (Hons) from Victoria University of Wellington, and a Doctor of Civil Law (DCL) from McGill University, Montreal, Canada.

  • Admitted as Barrister & Solicitor of the High Courts of Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, and Pitcairn Island.

  • Served as Crown Solicitor, Deputy Solicitor-General, and Acting Solicitor-General of Fiji before migrating to New Zealand in 1987.

  • Appointed as a District Court Judge on 4 November 2002 (Diwali) — presiding over civil, criminal, and mental health jurisdictions at Manukau and Auckland District Courts.

  • Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Fiji, where he delivers pro bono lectures and donates law books to the university’s library.

  • White Ribbon Ambassador — a passionate advocate against family violence on women.

  • Recipient of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award — the highest civilian honour for a non-resident member of the Indian diaspora, presented by the President of India in 2008.

  • Inducted into the Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame in 2014, presented by then Prime Minister Rt Hon John Key.
